Shae Dupuy Interview
Q: What’s new in the world of Shae Dupuy?
A: My brand new EP, Brave, is coming out October 28! Also, right now I’m in the planning stages of shooting three new music videos. We’re going to be releasing three videos at the same time for three of the new songs off the EP. It’s a big project for we’re doing all three videos in the span of two days. We wanted to do something special surrounding the EP and the videos seemed like a great way for people to see the stories behind the songs.
Q: How was it recording your upcoming EP, Brave?
A: It was amazing. I feel like I’ve put so much of myself into this project, from the writing of each song, to exactly what I wanted to hear in the production. There are so many songs on this project that I love and are proud of. Bringing these songs to life, and hearing them evolved into more than just an idea, it was everything I had hoped for.
Q: When writing a song, is there such a thing as investing too much time?
A: Oh for sure. Songwriting, can be a very personal thing and sometimes you get too close to what you’re writing and it’s hard to know when to throw in the towel or when a song’s just not working. Sometimes you need to take a step back and come back to a song with a fresh set of eyes and sometimes the idea just isn’t what you hoped it would be and you need to finish it and move on. Not every song is going to be a hit.
Q: Vinyl is making a comeback. Do you have a personal preference? Are you producing on vinyl?
A: I absolutely love vinyl. I’ve had a record player for a few years now and it’s one of my favourite things in my room. I think there’s just something so magical about the cracks and little nuances that you don’t get when listening to an mp3. I would love to have Brave on vinyl, but it’s just been an idea so far.
Q: How many shows do you play per year on average, and how crazy does the schedule get?
A: This year it wasn’t as many as I hoped. I spent most of the year on radio tours as well as traveling back and fourth between Nashville and Vancouver for writing and recording. With working on the EP it took up most of my time this year and kept me super busy but I still managed to play about 30 shows this year.
Q: Are you a fan of Spotify and similar streaming services? What are your thoughts on this?
A: I am. I use Spotify and Apple music daily. I understand from an artist standpoint that streaming services aren’t exactly where they need to be when it comes paying artists, however I think that the services are making music so much more accessible to everyone. It’s giving artists a chance to get airplay without having to top the charts in every country. It makes building a fan base across the world easier than it was 20 years ago.
Q: Making promo videos must be a lot of work and still fun to do. How do you look at it?
A: They’re so much fun! I think they’re important because it’s another way to connect with people; it’s an avenue for fans to get to know you better and keep their attention until you release new music. Sometimes there’s a big waiting period to fill between releases and these types of videos help to create continued hype.
Q: Do you see a biography being written someday about the experiences you acquired or will acquire in your life?
A: A girl can dream. I think it would be amazing to have big enough experiences or accolades to warrant a biography being written about my life but I think it would be a bit strange to write it or have someone else write it. I see the pro’s to letting people into my journey and how I got to where I am, but I also think it’s like letting people see very private parts of my life and I don’t know how I feel about that.
Q: Your voice is a delicate instrument. How long did it take you to perfect it? What do you do to keep it strong and healthy?
A: It’s taken me years of vocal lessons and working with vocal coaches to figure out what works for my voice because what works for someone else might not work for me, especially with my unique voice. I also spend a lot of time weekly developing my voice and honing into what makes it distinctive.
Q: Any words of wisdom to share with aspiring artists?
A: Never stop working. There’s going to be a lot of no’s. No matter how much natural talent you have, you have to have the work ethic to match it. Things don’t just happen and nothing should be handed to you, you’ve got to earn it because it’s just going to be that much better when it’ll all starts happening. As long as you’re working hard and putting out great music, someone will notice eventually.
