Gus G Interview 2017 FIREWIND and Ozzy Osbourne

Firewind Interview with guitarist Gus G.

– How is the life of Gus G. these days? Pretty busy I’m sure.

Yeah it’s pretty busy here, but it’s all good. I like it that way.

– How was it recording your album “Immortals” from a studio point of view?

It was relaxed. We didn’t set any deadlines; we took our time writing and recording this album. Luckily there was no pressure from the label or anybody so we just did our thing and had a lot of fun making this record.

– When writing a song, is there such a thing as investing too much time?

Some songs take longer than others. That’s just the nature of songwriting I guess. I like it when songs come to me easily and I have a burst of inspiration for 10-15 minutes and can get a lot of stuff out. But there are some songs that can take weeks or months to be completed. It doesn’t mean that they’re not good ones, you just gotta try harder sometimes. It’s weird how it all works out.

– With all the music videos you are creating there is a lot of detail involved. Do you involve yourself in the editing of these videos?

No, I leave that stuff to the director & his team.Gus G 2016 photo

– The music video “Ode To Leonidas” is filmed like a small movie – did you come up with this idea? How many hours did it take for the shooting and editing of it?

Our new album is a concept album and it specifically talks about the battle of Thermopylae. The song “Ode to Leonidas” is about the Spartan king Leonidas obviously, so the video had to follow the story. We gave the music and lyrics to the director and they sent us the script which we felt it totally does justice to the concept and what we’re trying to convey. We shot one full day in the studio but the editing and after FX took about 2 months to complete.

– Are the band fans of Spotify and similar streaming services? What are your thoughts on this?

Of course it’s convenient for everyone these days with streaming services, I’m not against it. However, I hope that the royalty rates for streams will become more artist friendly as we move into the future, as clearly streaming is as important as record sales, if not more important. Our generation is witnessing a huge technological evolution and change – and that’s exciting.

– Do you practice your guitar every day to keep up with current styles and genres?

I play guitar most every day, yes. And yeah I wanna keep upping my game, there’s lots of amazing players out there and that’s inspiring. A lot of players get too caught up on all that though and forget about the song. Songwriting needs practicing too.

– Would you say that the Ozzy Osbourne fans in general follow Firewind and all your projects or is it two different subjects all together?

There’s been some Ozzy fans on board since they saw me with him and that’s awesome. But in general they’re 2 separate subjects and you probably won’t see them crossing paths, as it’s been clear from the start that I’m either playing guitar for Ozzy and when I’m not, I’m doing my own thing.

– Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?

I’ll be dead long gone by that time, so I couldn’t guess. There must be some evolution in music, who knows? But I hope people will still remember the classic Rock & Metal songs in 100 years from now.
