Greg T. Walker Interview

Greg T. Walker Interview with Jason Saulnier — November 5, 2025

In this in-depth conversation, Jason Saulnier sits down with legendary bassist, songwriter and Southern Rock figure Greg T. Walker, known globally as a co-founder of Blackfoot, an early member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and now one of the driving forces behind the powerhouse band Two Wolf. The band’s two leading lights are founding member Greg T. Walker and original member Lance Lopez, a blues-rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist shaped by the influence of Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Two Wolf also features Kris Bell (vocals/guitar) and Rusty Valentine (drums), rounding out a lineup built for explosive volume and fiery musicianship.

On June 6, Two Wolf released their self-titled debut album via Los Angeles-based Cleopatra Records, unleashing a hellacious, blistering, kickass collection of hard Southern rock and high-octane blues-rock. Born from the raw, unfiltered spirit of American rock, Two Wolf emerges as a high-voltage Florida outfit whose sound fuses Southern grit with thunderous rock energy. With Lopez and Bell’s twin-guitar attack roaring like lightning against Walker’s unmistakable bass tone and Valentine’s seismic drums, the band delivers a ferocious, unforgettable sonic onslaught. Their debut marks the launch of a massive new chapter, with live shows and promotion planned across the country — proof that real rock ’n’ roll isn’t just alive, it’s louder than ever.

Walker’s history is integral to the story of Southern Rock. Greg T. Walker and Rickey Medlocke met in Jacksonville in 1969, later moving to New York City and eventually forming Blackfoot in 1970, inspired in name by their shared Native American ancestry. After joining Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1971, Walker and Medlocke reformed Blackfoot in 1972, leading the band into its most iconic era. Blackfoot reached peak success with their 1979 album Strikes, which hit #42 on the Billboard 200 and later went Platinum, featuring hit singles “Highway Song” (#26) and “Train, Train” (#38) — both receiving heavy radio play. Touring relentlessly, Blackfoot opened for The Who on December 7, 1979 at the Silverdome, and followed Strikes with Tomcattin’ (1980), Marauder (1981) and Highway Song Live (1982) before disbanding in 1985. A new Blackfoot lineup emerged in 2004 with Walker, Jakson Spires, Charlie Hargrett, and Bobby Barth. After lineup changes, Walker departed in 2011, regrouping with Hargrett as Fired Guns, later reuniting with Barth and Hargrett under the name Warrior’s Pride, while Medlocke continued with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Walker ultimately formed Two Wolf, joined by Lopez in 2014 as an original member, setting the stage for their current resurgence.

Lance Lopez’s journey is equally remarkable. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, he moved to Dallas at 12 and to New Orleans at 14 — already playing professionally in French Quarter clubs. At 17, Lopez was hired by Johnnie Taylor, touring the Chitlin Circuit for six months, then joined Lucky Peterson at 18, touring globally for three years. Mentored by Buddy Miles, Lopez had Miles co-produce his 1998 debut First Things First. In 2000 he toured Europe, opening for Steve Vai and Jeff Beck (2001). His album Wall of Soul (2003) featured Eric Gales, followed by Simplify Your Vision (2006) and Higher Ground (2007). Between 2008–2011 he toured Europe extensively, supporting ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Rod Stewart. In 2016, Lopez co-founded Supersonic Blues Machine with Kenny Aronoff and Fabrizio Grossi, releasing West of Flushing, South of Frisco with guest appearances from Billy Gibbons, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Warren Haynes, Eric Gales, and Chris Duarte. After leaving the band, Lopez released Live in NYC (Cleopatra Records) from Johnny Winter’s 70th birthday celebration and later his 2024 solo release Trouble Is Good. Now reunited with Greg T. Walker in Two Wolf, Lopez is back where the chemistry first formed — ready to push the band forward with renewed fire.
