Walker’s Cay Interview – Gary LaBarr

– What’s new in the world of Walker’s Cay? Hope all is well? We are all doing well, (knock on a wood block).  Just trying to put all of this Coronavirus in perspective.  It is sad.

– Let’s talk about your singles “Tell Me” and “Why Oh Why”.
How was the recording experience? The recording experience was very enjoyable!  Besides the snacks eaten, the entire procedure was relatively easy thanks to our fantastic recording engineer Mike Swain, who ALWAYS does a magnificent job!

 – Where did the band name come from? Gary LaBarr is a private pilot, and back in the late 1990’s, he flew himself (with a couple of friend’s), to a beautiful “out” island in the Bahamas’s called Walker’s Cay…And the name “was born” for a possible band project in the future!

 – Could you describe some of your earliest influences in life and in
music? Tom Scholtz of Boston was one.  A genius.  We loved the Beatles, (the early stuff with the GREAT harmonies).  Gary LaBarr’s cousin (Lainne) started him out on guitar at about age 11 learning three basic chords, (A, D, and E), and the rest is history!

 – Being a Canadian is it harder for radio distribution in certain
countries? Or is it pretty much the same now? Much harder!  (Unless there is still “payola”)!  Help!!!

 – Is it important for you to be active on Social Media as a musician? Absolutely!  That IS where everything is going now-a-days.  Without a Social Media Presence, no one really knows about you since promotion is all “computer driven” now…

 – With the music industry shutting down presently. How are you dealing
with these issues? We are hanging in there like the rest of the world.  We are hoping that people can remain healthy, and do what is right.  We will come out of this, and hopefully, for the better as human beings!

 – How important is it for a musician in these difficult times to spend
time on social media to self promote. It seems there’s lot’s more
live living room broadcasts on social media going on since there are no
more concerts? That is true to some aspect.  It is very important to “get out there.”  You know the old saying, “Out of sight, out of mind,” and with a lot of entertainers not performing live due to this virus, they are keeping it alive for their fans, family, and friends on Social Media. Can you say “Make-up?”

 – What would we be surprised to find in your music collection at home? A lot of GREAT “hair bands” from the 80’s and 90’s.  Bands that could ACTUALLY play, (and tune) their instruments.  We all like Classic pop and rock, with a bit of Alternative, and Blues all thrown in.

 – Thank you for taking the time in doing this interview. Wish you all
the best. Thank you very, very much for allowing us to be a part of your world.  This is what it is all about, and we sincerely thank you for it!
