Saul Interview | William McIlravy | 2019

Interview William McIlravy – Bass, Vocals of Saul from Sioux City, IA

– What’s new in the world of Saul?

We just released our new EP Aeons. So at the moment we’re hitting some of our home markets in support of it. The radio success of “Brother” is sending a lot of things our way. We have a great team mentoring us.

– The single “Brother” was the #1 most spun song on SiriusXM Octane TWO weeks in a row! You are now in the Top 40 at #35 on the national Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart! This should make you feel pretty good?

It’s an amazing feeling! Something that you dream of the first time you get a group of guys together in a garage. It’s coming pretty fast and we’re going to see how high we can take this song.

– How was it making the promo video for “Brother” and do you enjoy doing music videos?

It was cold. Haha! We filmed it in an old nursing home basement, mid December, in Northern Iowa. We had a lot of fun with the setting preparation. Moving old doors, wires, shelves and lighting. Chris Dawson did an amazing job of visualizing the shots to take and he was easy to work with. I love shooting videos. Seeing them come to life is rad, but the time spent with the band and Chris was the best part.

– Do you prefer music videos to lyric video?

I like them both. Music videos are fun to watch and if the video has a concept you can get into their head and feel it a little more. Lyric videos are great if it’s a new song and you’re trying to learn and sing a long. They both have their own purpose.

– When writing a song, is there such a thing as investing too much time?

It all depends on what feels right. If a song is isn’t flowing we will take a step back and assess it with a clear head.

– When do your ideas come to you?

A lot of times it will be randomly throughout the day or in conversation. We’ll text ideas to each other and figure out a concept for a song. There are times where someone will stop you mid sentence and ask you to repeat what you just said. It’s a lot of bouncing back and forth.

– Do you have any tours coming up in the near future?

Come late April/May we’ll be heading out to support Dallas, TX rockers Messer from Wisconsin down to Florida. In June and July we’re going to the East coast with Bobaflex to support half of their Coast to Coast Tour.

– How important is merchandising? Could artists survive without?

Merchandising means so much to us. We focus a lot on the presentation of our stand. It almost gravitates people to it. The best part is seeing people rock the gear and walk around, proud to be an Equal.

– What would be some of your main musical influences today?

We’re big fans of strange rhythm, hitting hard and haunting melodies. But, we’re not afraid to draw influence from anything.

– Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?

It seems to be moving in an electronic direction. Let’s just hope the guitars and drums are still involved. I think there will always be a place for rock and metal.
