Safe, So Simple interview with drummer Derek Ausseresses.
– What’s new in the world of Safe, So Simple?
New for us would obviously be our EP “Too Close To Closure” which drops Friday, March 11th. We are having a free EP release show that same day at Club XS in Tucson, and we will be shooting a live music video at that show. So, a lot of new and exciting stuff for us!
– How was it recording your new EP Too Close To Closure?
Oh boy, it was quite the process. Our writing/recording process spanned nearly 17 months. During that time we worked with 3 different producers and spent way more money than we anticipated. It’s actually where the EP’s name comes from. There were points where we almost called it quits, but we were too close to achieving that sense of closure and accomplishment. Despite it all, we did have fun and worked with some amazing people.
– How was it recording the promo video for “Teeth Like Sharks” I am sure a lot of editing?
Actually, no editing at all! That is all one continuous shot. The blocking/staging to make sure everyone hit their marks is what took the most time. We shot it with Jeremy Tremp at his house, so despite the hours of planning, it was a blast! He’s an insanely talented, creative, and fun producer.
– When writing a song, is there such a thing as investing too much time? What’s the shortest time you ever took to write one? What was your strangest inspiration?
I can’t say for certain what our shortest time would be. We definitely try to develop each song and each part until it flows the way we want it to. As a band, I can’t say we’ve ever had any strange things inspire us. However, we all grew up listening to Blink – 182 so I’m sure we’ve pulled inspiration from some interesting subject matter. Hahaha!
– Do you have any tours coming up in the near future?
We do! We are in the process of booking our very first tour for the end of May. We also have another we’re working on for late July early August. Both of those we head East, so hopefully in between we’ll get a West Coast run put together.
Safe, So Simple Interview with Derek Ausseresses
– While on the road, do you find time to practice your instrument?
Haven’t had to yet! I’d imagine it’ll be acoustic guitars and drum pads or pillows.
– What would be some of your main musical influences today?
Four Year Strong, A Day To Remember, Forever Came Calling, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, The Story So Far. That’s just to name a few.
– How important is it for a musician in this generation to spend time on social media?
I would venture to say as equally as important as making the time to play shows and tour. It’s great to make a connection through social media, but it’s also very important to make a real/personal connection as well.
– In your opinion, which album would be essential to have if someone were stranded on a deserted island?
Most important on a stranded island? Hmmm…whichever one has the most album literature printed with it. So you can make fires and wipe your rump!
– Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?
Hopefully music will continue to help inspire. I always see people as being music consumers and honestly I’m excited to see the next new media platform to host and share music.
Thank you so much for your questions and for helping us spread our music. We truly appreciate it!
