Otherwise Interview

1. Could you tell me about recording the latest Otherwise album True Love Never Dies?

It was an amazing learning experience recording with Jay Baumgardner at NRG Studios. He’s worked with a ton of amazing bands throughout his career, including Godsmack, Bush, Papa Roach, P.O.D., Seether and Evanescence (to name a few). We recorded at NRG studios for just over a month, which meant the process was fast & furious. We re-wrote and re-structured a few things in the studio, but for the most part we stayed true to the demos we had recorded over the last year. We only had a day of pre-production, and time was short, so we didn’t have much time to second-guess ourselves or think too much about what needed to be done. We plugged in, hit record, and let it roll. On top of all that, we also played shows nearly every weekend back in Las Vegas, along with a gig at the Roxy in Los Angeles… So, while we were recording our debut album, we were also driving back & forth from LA to Las Vegas on a weekly basis. But in the end, the album came out sounding killer… The process was so fast and such a whirlwind, even Jay himself said that most albums aren’t done like that.

2. What kind of Guitars and Amplifiers were played on the album?
Gibson Les Pauls and Gibson Acoustics, mostly through JCM 800 Marshall and Orange Rockerverb amps.

3. Do you use Social Media mostly for promotion of your music now?
Absolutely. We personally run our Facebook & Twitter to maintain a connection with our supporters. Social media is a crucial component to everyone’s career in the music industry these days.

4. Do you keep up to date with what’s coming out in your genre of music?
Always. While on tour, especially. We’re constantly listening to different rock radio stations throughout the country so we can hear what’s new in rock & roll… It’s always important for us to study our peers.

5. How is the current music scene in your area?
The Vegas scene is like any other scene – it has it’s peaks & valleys. Some years it’s strong, some years it’s not. However, the Vegas scene often suffers from a lack of stable venues… Many cool spots have come & gone over the years, and we’ve played almost all of them…

6. What other projects are you working on for the future?
Movie soundtracks, video game synchs, sports licensing, the brunette in the front row… you know, the usual ;)

7. What could we find interesting in your Music collection in 2012?
Right now I’m personally hooked on the new M83 album; the latest release from the Used is also pretty sweet; we’ve been listening to the Drive soundtrack a lot, as well.

8. Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician?
Everything & nothing, simultaneously.

9. Any advice for musicians that are starting in the music industry?
I’ve got 3 pieces of advice: (1) don’t quit, (2) DON’T QUIT, (3) don’t suck. In the end, even if you just stick to the first two, you’ll probably be okay. :)
