Greg Ball is a alternative rock singer songwriter based in Kingston, Ontario. Interview August 26, 2013
How was it recording and writing the album Mr. Rightplace?
The recording was a blast, got to go out to the Hip’s “Bath house recording studio” and it couldn’t have gone smoother. The writing process happens all the time, it’s more of trying to decide what will stay and what will go on the next record.
Where did the influences come from for this album Mr. Rightplace?
All of the songs are based around a situation. As far as musical influences Paul Langlois and the guys that I play with in the band really shaped the sound of things.
Are you keeping busy this summer with tour dates?
Not as busy as I would like to be, but we are playing a lot this fall.
Would you say touring now is more relaxed and easier to do?
I would say we are all a bit more relaxed. Just more comfortable as a band.
What equipment are you currently endorsing, etc.
Currently not getting paid to endorse anything. I like Guild Guitars, and long walks on the beach
Without Social Media could bands today manage to survive?
Every little bit helps out. Social media seems to be the fastest way to connect with people and let them know what you are up to
What were your earliest influences in life?
A camp counselor who made me want to play guitar and sing
What would be some of your main influences today?
Well assuming you get influenced by what you listen to?? Wilco is a big influence. I’ve been addicted to the record “AM” since I got it years ago.
What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
You would need to bring 10 people to get through it all. By a death in the family we have all of Zalman Yanovsky’s record collection as well. It’s a big beautiful wall full of treasures I am still looking for.
Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
I better could answer this in the fall, but I can only imagine from our little trips here and there. We tend to drink beers a bunch???
Where do you see music going in 100 years from now?
Hopefully my kids will make some money off it, the money that I never did ;)
