– What’s new in the world of Breathing Theory?
Well for starters we have a brand new album out available on all streaming networks. It’s called Balance. We put a lot of work into it and we think that it’s a beautiful magical piece of art! we also have some upcoming pretty decent-size shows as well as some festivals in the works or excited about that and theres some new music videos getting released this year!
– How was it recording and writing the material for Balance?
It was actually kind of as much of a nightmare as it was awesome. Lots of long trips back and forth to Louisville Kentucky. Couple long trips back and forth to Nashville Tennessee, working with Malcolm Springer on a couple tracks was definitely a new experience. Hanging out in Louisville in the art district and basically just having to kill time during the day some days, playing music with some of the natives just doing stuff to keep the juices flowing. Also as well as Nashville we got to record in the House of Blues district, so we were lucky enough to get a tour of some of the famous recording studios. Artists like Alison krauss have actually used, so that was awesome. But like I said it was definitely a nightmare, all the ups and downs of trying to get the songs done, going through the writing process and basically writing whole songs. Then deciding that they weren’t good enough, tearing them down and having to rewrite. So there is a lot of hard work that went into the past few years of getting this album out but we are very thankful to finally be done.
– Do you follow a formula when you write?
Most of the time when we are writing, we kind of start with either a vocal melody or a guitar riff or maybe something that’s stuck in one of our heads. We kind of just build off of that. Our strong suit is basically always finding the catchiness and keeping that vibe throughout.
– What’s your view on releasing single songs on YouTube with an image to represent the album cover? Do you think this trend will stay?
I think the song itself usually creates a mental picture of what it represents or what the message is portraying however I think the trend of having some kind of art or some kind of picture to tag along with it on YouTube definitely helps convey the message a little clearer so I think it’s a cool idea and will probably stick around.
– On choosing a band name like Breathing Theory who came with the idea on this band name and why?
I actually came up with the band name because we started to get this feeling that it was giving off maybe a heavier impression than what we really sounded like or what we were really going for but essentially the idea behind the name before breathing theory was just to seize the day, live for today, live like it could be your last. So because I liked the word breathing I just added on the word theory and this idea of with every breath you take, live to the fullest kind of came about and it was catchier so we stuck with it.
– How many shows do you play per year on average, and how crazy does the schedule get?
Usually we try to play one show every month or every couple months that way we have time to promote it well and blow it up but that is based around when we’re home if aurateur we are much much busier we typically play like 3 to 4 maybe even five shows a week sometimes this particular year were taking time to really focus on content and growth so we’re only doing probably a couple handfuls of shows but we hope to eventually get back out on the road and had that busy schedule again. it does get hectic trying to find time to drive and sleep and shower and just relax and have personal time but it’s all worth it in the end when the shows are good and the crowds are good and the venues are great.
– How important is merchandising? Could artists survive without?
Merchandising definitely is an important part of being in a band because it essentially is part of the fuel for the fire if you’re not putting out gear and shirts and things to not only make her fans happy that they can support you with but also to regenerate some kind of income from it, you just be losing out on financial growth for the band and quite frankly be losing out on advertisement from your fans that want people to know who you are.
– Any words of wisdom to share with aspiring artists?
We always like to basically tell any bands that we are friends with our people we meet on tour if you’re really serious start saving money and start forming a business plan because without a plan without focus without finances it’s really really hard so start there and do things the way other professional bands are doing them or at least work towards that.
