A Bad Think Interview

1. What’s new in the world of A BAD THINK?

A lot! The new album “sleep” is coming out on the 17th. The video is all ready to go on the new single “On and On” directed by Derrick Borte. Going into rehearsals next month to get ready for some shows, and always working on new material.

2. How was it recording the new album SLEEP?

I like to think that it is kind of like giving birth to a new life form, though not quite as painful. I love the process of making records though. The songs are like my children from the very start of a simple melody to the end when they go off to mastering. I am usually sad when my albums are finished.

3. Releasing promo videos must be a lot of work and well worth it after its done? What’s you view of making videos?

I am not really big on the traditional music videos, i.e. a band hoping around on stage with a hot chick. The videos I like making, tells a story with the music and the video working as one to maximize both mediums to create emotion. They are a lot of work but I love doing them and it helps promote the album. By the way, my new video has two hot chicks in it.

4. During an average year how many show do you do nowadays?

I haven’t been touring. I have been writing and recording the last few years, but when I did we played almost 28 nights a month.

5. Could you describe some of your earliest influences?

I grew up listening to Roxy Music, Yes, and Zeppelin. I love Bill Bruford’s drumming.

6. How important is it for a musician in this generation to spend time on social media?

I think it is an important way for like minded people to find and share the music they like, but I don’t spend a lot of energy on it myself. I would rather write and record.

7. How many hours a day do you spend on social media and the internet?

I spend quite a bit of time on the internet with all of the different music sites we are on, but not much on the social side. I try to keep people informed as to what is going on, but I’m not very good at it.

8. What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?

My collection 78’s

9. Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve been on the road, but a typical day would be Sleeping the entire way to the gig. Sound check at 6. back to the hotel to check in. Eat something. Get ready to go to the show. Play the show. Go to an after party. Back at the hotel by 8 in the morning. Sleep for a couple hours, than do it all again.

10. Where do you see music in general in 100 years from now?

That’s a good question. I think just about everyone will forget the mindless pop songs of the day, but the music that survives will have something more to say and some way to help the listener feel something emotionally. That kind of music will never go out of style.
