We Butter The Bread With Butter Interview

– What’s new in the world of We Butter The Bread With Butter?
Some things happened. There’s our new album out and we’re really proud of our new sound.

– How was it recording your album Wieder Geil!?
It was very cool! Doing this one felt nearly the same as it was on our first album. A lot of things came almost by itself because it felt right at the moment. After a little break from touring a lot with our last album we decided to do this one as easy and free as possible. I think that was a good decision.

– How did you go about finding the artwork for the album?
It was something like 2 days until the deadline for artwork and songs etc. There has been another cover with us (the band) on the cover in a very damaged and thrashed look. Actually isn’t was cool for us the whole time…but when things are getting serious you often get a clearer look for what you are doing. So we thought it was to much Eighties to put the band on the cover. But these pictures were perfect for the booklet in the end. The red cat was a shirt design before. As we had just one more day left until we had to deliver all the artwork we tried every design we had as an album cover. This red cat was just perfect for us.

– When writing a song, is there such a thing as investing too much time? What’s the shortest time you ever took to write one? What was your strangest inspiration?
I guess there’s definitely a limit when it comes to overthinking. Of course some things need a lot of time until it’s getting great. But if you need weeks for a song…maybe there’s no right feeling and you should put it away. That’s what i always do. If a song isn’t good after 3 or 4 days a put it away. The shortest time we ever took? Most of our songs are written in something like 3 hours :D Especially on our new record! There are just songs the came out quickly and felt good from the beginning. Just songs that were fun in the making – which leads to not having trouble of writing the song.

– Do you consider album artwork as important now that music is mostly downloaded?
I think there is an important meaning for the artwork. You can transport your message or even your image you want to show the people with a visual component next to your music. This is what you get to see on Facebook, YouTube or the website and stuff. Maybe it’s even more important then back in the time because of all the social stuff and the necessity of having good designs in your merchandise to survive as a band nowadays. There is so much music on the market right now and it’s much easier for a band to sound gut from the beginning, so that I think the album artwork and your look in general really is as important as the music.

– How many shows do you play per year on average, and how crazy does the schedule get?
Last year was insane! It was way to much so that we had to say we can’t do this again this year. I know that sounds kind of crazy – a band that doesn’t want to tour that much?!. But when you are making absolutely no money out of it and your are like 120 days without a break on a tour. Coming back home isn’t easy as you can imagine. You’re going to loose friends and contact to your families and can’t pay your rent anymore. Even it is fun and big honor to see the world with the help of your music while driving around – rock musicians aren’t treatend that good all the time and there are days and weeks with no food or showers. It can become quiet hard of you still want to get the best out of you for the fans. As there was the point we couldn’t do the best we decided to play as much shows as we can where we are still able to bring the shit out of it instead of just doing a day to day job on tour.

– Does the band write music on the road at all?
No, not really. We like to record music because of getting in the role of the listener when writing music. We like to have a free mind and open-end time when sitting on a song. Sometimes we get greed moments and inspirations on tour. We try to keep that until we let it out at home.

– What would be some of your main musical influences today?
For me it’s the fact of having an unbelievable amount of new music coming out every day. That pushes me somehow very hard of working on something that hasn’t been there before and has a unique touch. The second thing is the development of sound. You can not allow your self to bring out an album when letting just one guitar track not 100% on the point or without giving your best not just in your songs but in the sound. That’s really interesting and a new way of writing today I guess.

– What would we be surprised to find in your music collection at home?
Maybe the Sailor Moon Soundtrack? ;) Or the fact that there isn’t too much metal in it. I like a lot of good pop and alternative rock music.

– Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?
This should be very interesting. It’s getting more electronic, more larger-than-life sound music. But in times where dubstep and gabba are already invented and music get’s as crazy as possible it’s hard to imagine what comes next. Right now there are still great melodies coming out…but maybe there’s a point some when where everything has been done. I can imagine that new instruments will be invented due to the desire of music than.
