Marloes Voskuil Interview

– What’s new in the world of Marloes Voskuil?
Well, I just got back from the 70000 tons of metal cruise and it was awesome!! Last year we played on the cruise and this time we went back as visitors. And it was a special edition for us because the Cripper award was handed out to Izegrim at the official press conference. This award is the ‘peoples choice’ for the surprise or breakout band of the cruise. We won the 2014 edition with Izegrim. Needless to say that we are very honored to be the first recipient of the physical award. And we’re very busy with writing new material for our upcoming album.

– Where did the idea come from for the deluxe edition of Point of no Return to release it?
The EP point of no return has been sold out for quite a while now and a lot of fans asked us when this EP would be available again. Fans were also asking for live songs and that’s why we combined the album with 2 live songs.

– When writing a song, is there such a thing as investing too much time?
I don’t think so. It takes a lot of time to write and arrange a song. It’s hard to stay satisfied when the song is done. Well actually a song is never done. It can always be better!

– Are the equipment and instruments used on stage mostly the same as the ones used on the album?
Yes, the guys tried a lot of amps and in the end they were very satisfied with the sound of the Peavey 5150. They recorded the album with this amp and they both bought the amp to get the same sound on stage. I use the same bass equipment in the studio as I use live.

– Do you have any tours coming up in the near future?
In March we will fly to Spain to do a mini tour. No long tours are scheduled yet but there are a lot of clubs shows and Open Air festivals confirmed.

– How many shows do you play per year on average, and how crazy does the schedule get?
About 25 shows per year. The schedule doesn’t get that crazy because we only do weekend shows. Sometimes we have a show on Friday and we have a show on Saturday, 900 km further ahead so those are the hard weekends.

– What would we be surprised to find in your music collection at home?
It’s not a secret anymore that I’m a huge Queen fan and I listen to their music very often. I’ve got the whole Queen collection at home. In January I’ll go to the Queen concert in Amsterdam, with originals members Brian May and Roger Taylor. Really looking forward to this one. I never had the change to see Brian May live so a dream comes true!
When I’m not in the mood for metal I also like to listen to Muse or Alter Bridge.

– Do you see a biography being written someday about the experiences you acquired or will acquire in your life?
Haha a cartoon would be fine but no biography for me. My life is not that interesting to fill a whole book.

– Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
You wake up in the tour bus and most of the time the night liner is already at the venue. You take a shower and some breakfast and then it’s time to get the gear out of the trailer into the venue. When this is all done, the waiting begins. If you are lucky the venue is in the city so you can do some site seeing.

– Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?
To be honest I’ve never thought about that but I think the DJs will be even more popular than now.
I don’t think mainstream music will get back to the roots of real instruments and amazing singers. Unfortunately….
And Metal will be the same but I think there will be some new genres.
