Beauty In The Suffering Interview

1. What’s new in the world of Beauty In The Suffering?
Hello! A lot of things going on! New music. New videos. New artwork. A short zombie film. Tour dates too.
Our full production zombie videos based off of a short film we did last month will start to drop in February or March 2014. From there we hope to be making headway on tour dates. So there should be plenty of exciting things for those who are interested in more Beauty In The Suffering.

2. How was it recording the album The Crazies?
The recording process was fun! Was the very first time I had managed the entire process on my own. Tracking every instrument (with the exception of live drums) was challenging overall but a piece of cake in reality.

3. Any tour dates for Beauty In The Suffering?
We are putting together the live show for 2014. To be continued..

4. How was it filming the latest music video The Crazies?
It was a blast! We had a bunch of friends come out to dress up and play zombie and we just rocked it in about 7 or 8 takes. Shot it in an old warehouse in downtown Oklahoma City and we just went for it – Zombie Powers activated! The shoot went very quick and it definitely got me thinking that we need to be doing this on a much more regular basis in the form of live shows.

5. What were your earliest influences in life?
That’s a huge question right there. If you are referring to musical influences then almost anything I could get my hands on. Very cinematic. TONS of comic books.

Album-wise and in no particular order – Prince’s Purple Rain, Ministry’s The Land Of Rape And Honey, Iron Maiden‘s Powerslave, Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar, Rammstein’s Herzeleid, HIM’s Razorblade Romance, Nine Inch Nail’s Fragile, Static X’s Wisconsin Death Trip. Some old Kiss, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Duran Duran, 80’s hair metal was key too – I was all over the place really.

6. What would be some of your main influences today?
I like to know what’s going on so I skim the daily news headlines on a day to day basis. A lot of horror, science fiction, pre and post apocalyptic themes, and Biblical references too. A lot of film – preferably indie and foreign – short films too. I am a student of history and a major history nerd in general and that seeps in there too. I just discovered Netflix a few months ago and I am in heaven with having such a huge library of cinematic yummy-ness a mouse click away.

7. What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
The most interesting thing about my own personal music collection would be that there isn’t really much of a collection at all. I rarely listen to music outside of my own. It’s not so much a statement as I have listened to plenty of music in the past and growing up. More and more often though I tend to shy away from listening to other people’s vision as I prefer to stay focused on my own. At any time I could decide to do an about face on that but it seems a bit unlikely. I hear music in my head so silence is very much underrated. Riffs come out of nowhere and then I run into the studio to lay down the basic rhythmic patterns or record something using my phone’s video camera for later use.

8. Where do you see music going in 100 years from now?
That’s hard to say since I have a difficult time imagining us being here at all in a hundred years. If anything much more acoustic music since electronic devices will probably be rare after the fall of mankind. I’m picturing little xylophones made from human skull type stuffs. It may sound macabre but it’s more of a tragic future I see at the moment – but there is beauty in our suffering so we’ll see. I suppose optimistically speaking we could be intergalactic by then too trans-beaming ourselves and our bands one song at a time to 12 different destinations for any given set list – that could be cool actually..

Extra questions with DieTrich Thrall from Beauty In The Suffering
Life without music would be: In the old days I would say that I might as well be in a coma. The more optimistic Thrall of today would still say pointless off the cuff but I suppose if I went deaf and couldn’t make music I would find another way to create such as writing.
Favorite movie: Tough but I always go with Excaliber – an early 80’s epic retelling of the Legend of King Arthur.
Favorite sport: Indoor sports
Favorite food: Mexican but I can only eat it once or twice a month. It’s bad for my girlish figure.
Favorite drink: Morgan or Jager shots when socializing. Or Water.
Favorite saying: “The beauty we glean from the suffering we have endured can never be denied..”
Favorite car: Ha – one that runs.
Favorite book: Tough one. Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep or American Psycho. Or Dune.
Favorite band: My biggest influence was always Prince.
CD or Vinyl: I rarely listen to music but if I won the album collection of my dreams and had a choice as to how I would prefer to have it pieced together as a collection I would definitely choose vinyl.
Star Wars or Star Trek: Old school Star Wars. It was nice to get some new Star Wars movies but you kinda figured they would have a hard time living up to the old movies.
PC or Mac: I’ve had more experience with a PC. I’m really not all that loyal to any one brand that I didn’t have a personal hand in creating.
