Adria Lang Interview
1. What are your current projects for 2012?
Musically, this is probably it. In my other life I am a TV writer and will be going out for staffing season this spring, so fingers crossed.
2. How was the process for participating in the Vixens vol.1 compilation by HRX Records?
Drunken hilarity. I love David and Joseph to death, so going over to record with them was really an excuse to have fun. I also filmed many of the sessions for an up coming behind the scenes documentary that we’re all working on. I was in a rare position to meet all of the other girls, so that was cool. It also helps that my house and the studio are on the same street.
3. What are you currently endorsing?
Liberty from the Cylons. And I think we need to go back to theIsland.
4. Adria what’s your take on the sex appeal in the music industry, etc?
Sex sells. It’s as simple as that. And it sells mostly to the simple.
5. What’s your vision of the Internet as a tool to promote and get your music out?
If it were up to me I’d do a record and put it out only on 8-track. So, it’s probably a good thing it’s not up to me. The Interwebz is like a thick soupy stew of every kind of content you can imagine and most of it is utter shit. I think that quality and talent will rise to the top of any primordial ooze. Is internet is a good tool? Of course. It’s just more complex then the days when your song would just come out on the radio and be judged by a much less jaded court of public opinion. The internet is saturated with information and it’s harder (and easier) to stand out these days. The one constant thing that can’t be skirted no matter how clever you are, is that in the long run, if you are truly talented and work really really hard, you will succeed. Trite but true. I did this record because I believe that Joseph and Buka (David) fall into that category.
6. How is the current Music Scene in your area doing?
I live in EchoPark, Los Angeles. Let me put on my ironic Cosby sweater, hippie headband, and American Apparel leggings and go down to Silverlake Coffee to do a poll. The music scene in my area is ruled by the hipster. My revenge is to drive slowly through the neighborhood blasting Shostakovich and Metallica at full volume as often as possible.
7. Could you tell us about your main influences as a singer, etc?
I grew up on a diet of Jazz, Folk Americana, and Musical Theatre. My biggest musical influences as a singer are Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Karen Carpenter, Janis Joplin, and of course Angela Lansbury.
8. What could we find interesting in your Music collection?
I don’t have much of a music collection these days. But something interesting might be the CD my dad made for me to play at his funeral. He’s not dying or anything, just eccentric. It’s a grand mix of New Orleans Jazz, Ragtime, Blues and Brazilian Choro.
9. Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life?
I get up, feed the kitties, shower, then go into my office to create and destroy worlds. I murder people, I force them to change, to do my bidding, I put them in impossible situations, I make them laugh, cry, fuck, dance, I make them do horrible things, beautiful things, magical things, and then when I’m done, I usually eat something and watch TV. I drink a lot of coffee.
10. Are there any tour dates lined-up for in the near future?
No.
11. Are there any more products or projects we can see from you in the future?
Yes. Google me in a year.
