Kevin Martin Interview – Singer for american hard rock band Candlebox. The influential, multi-platinum rock band from the powerful 90’s Seattle music movement, returns with their long-overdue sixth album Disappearing in Airports on April 22. The new album showcases the group’s introspective and poetically candid songwriting with their signature musical immediacy.
Kevin Martin Interview
– What’s new in the world of Candlebox?
A lot, new members, new tour, new record, new aches, new pains etc. Really busy gearing up for the release of “Disappearing in Airports.” It is very exciting time right now.
– How was it recording Disappearing in Airports from a studio point of view?
It was really fun – a very loose and relaxed 12 days of recording. We put pressure on ourselves to perform within that limited time frame but it doesn’t feel like we were pressured at all. It was a very casual work environment. Carson [Slovak] and Grant [McFarland] made it incredibly easy to be creative not to mention “Think Loud Studios” is world class so you’ve got this inspiring work live situation that allows you to be productive while maintaining your creativity and sanity.
– Did the band have a lot of input in making the lyric video “Vexatious”?
We spoke briefly about what we were looking for but ultimately we left it up to the creator of it. Super happy with the outcome for sure, if we’d have given more input we’d have probably screwed it up!!
– Will there be a promo video for the band’s latest album?
Yes, working on it now, actually. Stay tuned!
– In April the band is embarking on a American tour. Is there new cities you are venturing in that the band never played yet?
Not on this run and pretty sure we’ve played every city in America, joking, but we’re really looking forward to playing these new songs in every city we visit, just so happy with the record you know.
Spotify, Videos and more
– Is the band fans of Spotify and similar streaming services? What are your thoughts on this?
We are, we all make playlists and some time share them with one another. I think streaming is the way of the future and every band needs to embrace it! Quite honestly, how can you reach 1 million people in one day on any other format? Simple math me thinks!
– How important are music videos in the industry today? How do they compare to videos from 20 years ago?
I’m not really sure, I think Vimeo, Vevo, YouTube etc. are great but I don’t think they really make that much of a difference to an artist career and frankly I don’t think today’s videos compare at all to many videos from the ‘90s.
If you look back at some of the greats, ah la, Michael Jackson’s Thriller or many of those Nine Inch Nails videos no one will ever come close to reproducing or creating anything as ground breaking or visceral.
– In your career you have played with great musicians. What would be your greatest memories and achievements until now?
I don’t think they’ve been musical all. I’d have to say my son Jasper has been my greatest achievement until now. I’ve played some incredible shows, written a few cool songs but nothing in my career compares to what I have with my son.
– Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?
Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure! It’s gonna save the world I hope, because we all need music in order to breathe!
