Idol Of Fear Interview with guitarist / vocalist Austin Myers discusses All Sights Affixed, Ablaze album, social media and writing music.
What’s the plans for Idol Of Fear in 2015? We are back at work creating a new E.P. that should be out early spring. Other than that we will continue to promote the ‘All Sights Affixed, Ablaze’ LP and hit the road as often as possible.
How was it recording your first album All Sights Affixed, Ablaze?
It was a chaotic, blissful, and trying period of time for each member… we visited many extremities.
How did you go abouts to making the artwork?
We came up with a concept and gave it to Mark Riddick to make it into something ferocious. He was great to work with and is a fucking cool guy for working with both huge bands as well as underground ones like ourselves.
Does the band write music on the road at all?
We’re always writing music, always sharpening the blade.
During a year how many shows do you do on average and how crazy does the schedules get?
We are just getting started with Idol of Fear, so far we have been playing a limited amount of shows while making each one as intense as possible. 2015 is lining up to be our biggest year yet and we’ll be on the road a lot more.
Could you describe some of your earliest influences in life and in music?
A lot of it growing was the old classic rock albums of our parents time. As we got into more music and the arts we found ourselves drawn to more complex and musically expressive genres such as metal and the great works of the classical/baroque/romantic period.
How important is it for a musician in this generation to spend time on social media?
The most vital thing is to make sure you’re writing good music but we recognize it’s become an important way to keep connected with people who are interested. We have forged some strong connections globally through these channels and we will keep reaching out to like minded individuals.
What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
You would find a pretty vast range of genres. Tonnes of metal cds, some highlights: Asphyx, Deathspell Omega, autographed ones from Mayhem, Immortal, Inquisition, Incantation, Samael, Watain and others. Also Wendy Carlos, Tomita, Eric Satie, Ligeti, Stravinsky, Debussy, Danny Elfman, Tangerine Dream. We could go on.
Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
We haven’t done any tours yet but are looking forward to getting some going this year along the east coast.
Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?
It will probably be a bunch of old remixes of Shania Twain with psychic rave beats and too much cowbell. It will be hateful times full of famine and warfare.
