Cavina Interview with Matteus Cavina guitarist and singer for Heavy Metal band from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Cavina Interview
– What’s new in the world of Cavina?
(Matteus Cavina) Well, first of all, thanks for the opportunity, Jason. Well there’s a lot going on. Our debut EP is being very well accepted in Europe and North America, and now we’re getting prepared to record our debut full length album. We’re still analyzing some proposals to release it, once we wanna do something very special, because the album will be conceptual. After that we will start the tour probably in Europe first because we are based in London now.
– How was it recording your single Better?
(Matteus Cavina) Better is a song from the EP and when we were at studio in Brazil recording, we just realized that Better had a great potential to be the single. Was basically just myself, my brother Eduardo (Lead singer/bassist), Avner (drums) and our friend and great producer Guto Gonzalez (Onwer of Studio Lamparina in Sao Paulo-Brazil), discussing and listening a lot to Black Sabbath to get “that vibe”, you know.. We recorded almost everything in live sessions and we don’t usually putting base guitars, so we could get the real sound of the band as a trio.
– How do you build a song up from nothing to become something?
(Matteus Cavina) I don’t know…I usually write about something that can really make people think about the world and our relationship with each other as human beings and what we are doing and how we are leaving aside our roots and our principles. Better talks about how to become a better person, overcoming yourself and all that superficiality and emptiness that comes in today’s society. It’s a call to look inside yourself and see your own truth. it doesn’t happen every time, but I wrote “Better” in 10 minutes.
It just came out. I think it’s something that comes from the heart, a willingness to do something to change things opening people’s eyes and when it leaves you and turns a song, then you realize that you did something good with your despair. You know, Eduardo is my brother and Avner our best friend and we’re very connected musically, so they do understand exactly what the music should become, then they just come and composes the whole song with me. Eduardo has also written songs like “My World” but in the end the process of composition is always the same.
– Do you consider album artwork as important now that music is mostly downloaded?
(Matteus Cavina) Course i do. The album artwork is like a book cover. I remember when Eduardo and I was just kids and we used to spend hours just looking into cover’s artwork of bands we were listening to. It was like a free pass to get into that new world. By the way, yesterday i was just doing the same with Judas Priest’s Painkiller…again Lol. The front cover of our EP, it’s seems a simple artwork, but it’s a symbol that represents all that is within it. And inside has many other arts that also represents the contents of the entire work. I think it’s part of the magic of listening to an album.
– Do you have any tours coming up in the near future?
(Matteus Cavina) Yes, we are working for some dates in USA and summer in Europe. The dates will be available on CAVINA’s official pages soon.
– Anytime someone is featured in Rolling Stone magazine that should make an artist feel great. What’s your thoughts on this?
(Matteus Cavina) Yes, you’re right. The first time we were in Rolling Stone Magazine was because of a virtual fest called VIRADA VIRTUAL (it’s 24 hours of bands of all genres, playing live at studio but broadcast live on internet in the same time) MTV Brazil and Rolling Stone Magazine broadcasted the whole fest live on their websites and pages.
After that, i met a guy from RS that really dig our music and opened that door for us. We were 3 times in RS and the last time was in September last year, when RS released the video music of Better. Was an exclusive launch.
– Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
(Matteus Cavina) It’s really awesome for us, i mean we are a big family. I’m with my brother and my best friend, playing Heavy Metal music in different places to a different public every day, that also love Metal. It’s the best thing in the world! There’s no ego between us, so I think this is essential for shows and for coexistence.
– Do you use mostly Facebook now as a primary website source for the band?
(Matteus Cavina) No, in my opinion i think Facebook doesn’t show who are your real fans. I mean, you can pay for a post and it will appear to a lot of people but there’s no guarantee that they are metal-heads, (in our case for example). So, the gold today for a successful career is called “likes”??? I don’t believe in that. We are using soundcloud, Reverbnation, Instagram etc, radios, webradios, and websites specialized in Heavy Metal Music, and also Facebook.
But I think it’s a big mistake people assess a band by the amount of “likes” they have on Facebook. That doesn’t make any sense.
– What would we be surprised to find in your music collection at home?
(Matteus Cavina) haha, good one. Well, i have to admit…i got many albums from the 70’s of Disco Music, and i’m also into a RAP/Hip Hop music…but only those who are good and has a real message in the lyrics.
