Surrender the Fall Interview
1. What’s new in the world of Surrender the Fall?
We’re back out touring the country with our brothers in Nonpoint. This is our 3rd tour with these guys so it felt good to jump back into it, head first, with them! We’ve also just released our new single “Pitiful” which we are really excited about.
2. Where did the influences come from for the album Burn in the Spotlight?
Mentally- There were a lot of obstacles that were faced over the years while trying to make our place in the music world. That definitely pushed and tested our limits and basically forced us to find ourselves. These songs are basically a journal entry of the last decade of our lives.. as well as some motivational ones to keep us on the edge and moving forward!
Sonically- We decided to not be another band that was just going to be pigeon-holed into a certain genre that will just fade away in a couple of years. We decided to just write good songs. A roller coaster of sounds and emotions that could/would still be listened to 20+ years from now. We decided to make an attempt at writing timeless music rather than just timely music.
Bands- We are ALL into different types of music in this band. Literally, Everything from Garth Brooks To Goatwhore. U2 to the Used, Acidbath to Aerosmith…there’s a little bit of everything in these songs, even if we’re the only ones that can hear them..They are there.
3. I am sure you are looking forward to the tour with Nonpoint and Redline Chemistry?
Yes, This is our 3rd run with the Nonpoint boys and we were all looking forward to it. Everyone in this band has been listening to Nonpoint for years so its an honor to share the tour with those guys. The Redline guys are killer! Two days into the tour and we were already parked in a hotel parking lot with all of the buses together.. threw up some tents, busted out the stereo, some beer, the BBQ pit and started throwing down! That’s how we do it around here!
4. Would you say touring now is more relaxed and easier to do?
Yes, especially when all of the band members and the crew members all get along. It definitely makes the production go more smoothly. Everyone is always helping everyone. We share gear, we share beer, we share stories about missing family back home. It definitely makes it a little easier to know that you’re not alone out here. If you don’t have a good time while out on the road with us or Nonpoint then its probably because you’re an asshole haha. We’re here to have a good time!
5. What equipment are you currently endorsing, etc.
Personally, I (Eddie) have been using D’addario strings for almost 20 years and literally have only popped 3 or 4 of them. We are endorsing Diamond amps/cabs and DBZ guitars. Devin uses MarkBass gear and Musicman Basses. We have recently been picked up by Ernie Ball which is awesome! Wireless Sennheiser gear.
6. Without Social Media could bands today manage to survive?
YES! I think that the best thing about Social Media is that at any given second some kid in (ex.) Turkey could be listening to anyone’s song. Whether it’s a fully produced record or something that someone recorded in Mom’s garage with a 4 track..it’s out there for any and everyone to listen to. (Which is amazing!) but I also think that it’s made lots of “promoters” lazy. Too many people don’t realize that it takes way more than creating an event and a banner on Facebook. When we play in Memphis (where we are based) we go out to bars and other shows (which you should do anyway..SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC!) and hand out fliers. We have flier parties and go from light pole to light pole taping them up. Put them on windshields of cars all over town. Social Media is just another tool to get your music out there.
7. What were your earliest influences in life?
My Parents, My grandparents…they’re all the most selfless and giving people that I know.
8. What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
HA! You’ll find A little bit of everything in there! Literally, James Brown box set. Ray Charles Christmas Album, a variety of ICP albums. Every Sepultura, Pantera, Deftones, Korn and Machine Head album ever made…and blind melon.
9. Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
How much time ya got, buddy? Pull up at a venue, load in. Try to find something to eat, sound check then do some interviews and meet n greets. Tear up the stage then hang out with as many people as possible. at the end of the night take turns in the bathroom with the baby wipes to wipe the sweat off. Go to sleep, wake up and do it all over again.
10. Where do you see music going in 100 years from now?
Well, if it keeps getting any more cookie cutter? straight down the shitter. But, there will always be purists out there doing what we do, trying our best to keep it as real as possible!
