Flo Mounier, drummer for Montreal Technical death metal band Cryptopsy. Interview November 9, 2012.
Cryptopsy Interview
Could you tell me about the process in choosing the songs for the new Cryptopsy album “The Best Of Us Bleed”?
It was actually pretty simple, we chose songs that were fan favorites and songs that we as a band thought would be cool to include. The rest of the stuff is very rare live at shows and studio taping’s.
What were some of the influences used in writing the new tracks for “The Best Of Us Bleed”?
Since Youri Raymond wrote most of them, I would say that he worked hard on trying riffs that sounded like Cryptopsy. He had never composed for the band before lol, so his goal and influences again was pretty much us.
Whose concept was the artwork for this latest Cryptopsy release?
The Best Of was pretty much done by Leif from Century Media and Japanese artist Toshihiro Egawa. The new Cryptopsy album was done by Mircea Eftemie and the concept of the band.
Will there be any tours in support of this album?
Yes, we have done some shows already like the Loudpark Fest in Japan and have more in our area in 2012. But the bulk of the touring worldwide will start in 2013.
Would you say that social media has helped Cryptopsy?
Yes, I guess it does help at times and in the same breath it does hurt at times as well. Social media, I would say, better serves bands that don’t have a market. It puts people on the map, if you wish. But in our case, it does help to get news out.
With all the bands coming out today, do you keep updated with what comes out online at all?
I have to be honest and say no. I have my favs, and I do still discover new things once in a while, but to say that I am up to date on what’s new and happening, I would again say no.
What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
It’s diversity, I would say. I do listen to all sorts of different styles, so bands and artists from everywhere around the world in different genres. There are some styles of music that I usually do not go into, but hey if it’s good, it’s good and that’s it!
Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life?
Get up, tend to the baby and the kids, have breakfast, try to get at least an hour of practice time on the drums. Do band and personal business, run around and get stuff done, have dinner, catch some TV (movies) and call it a night.
How is the music scene in your area today?
The music scene in Montreal has and remains very strong. It’s funny, but bands around the world know that when they get to Montreal, they’re gonna have a good show. I don’t know why it’s like this, but I won’t complain.
Any advice for future musicians?
Practice, persistence and humility.
