– What’s new in the world of NeverWake?
We just released a brand new single and music video titled “Call Out My Name” which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf0gKtlzCQc. This is off our upcoming EP “Misguided” which was produced by Disturbed bass player and good friend of ours, John Moyer. Out new EP “Misguided” will be releasing early this year so keep an eye out!
– How was it recording and writing the material for Call out my Name?
It’s always fun to see where songs start and where they end up. I remember this song when it was just a riff. I remember I was listening to Soilwork at the time so I had quite a few of one string riff ideas. Where the song ended up I could never have guessed but it’s awesome to be here. It’s always a cool process building something from barely anything with the band.
– Talking about promotions and music. Do you focus more on Spotify or Apple Music or even YouTube? What’s the preference if any?
Right now in our industry I’d say youtube and Spotify are the powerhouses. that’s where everyone is and that’s probably the 2nd and 3rd largest income sources for artists. It’s also very easy to get your music shared there so a lot of focus has been shifted in those directions.
– When do your ideas come to you for music?
I like to stress the fact that ideas come from anywhere for us. It could be a sound that you hear, it could be something you see, it could be just a riff that pops in your head. From there you have the building blocks on where to take the song. You take it all the way if you can but if you get stuck we bring it to the other band members and we feed off each other’s ideas and influences.
– On choosing a band name like NeverWake who came with the idea on this band name and why?
We chose NeverWake after we were on a big writing spree. We were noticing a pattern in our music that led to this dark eerie sound. The songs reminded us of nightmares that never ended. That’s how we landed on NeverWake.
– How many shows do you play per year on average, and how crazy does the schedule get?
It really varies on what’s being done with the band. If we are writing we could have 20 maybe 30 shows in a year. If we are promoting an album that show number easily jumps to 50 – 60+. And when you’re touring, the schedule does just get crazy, you literally LIVE in crazy.
– How important is merchandising? Could artists survive without?
When you buy merchandise you are putting money right into the artists pocket. At least for us, It’s not going through different channels, it doesn’t take a certain time period before we can get the money now. And that helps a ton. Bands that are on the road know this all too well. You need gas, you need food, and on top of that there are so many expenses that are just natural to touring.
– Any words of wisdom to share with aspiring artists?
Of course. Be yourself. Listen to constructive criticism but don’t take it as the end-all-be-all. Trust your gut. If you’re unsure about something, walk away and come back… And make sure the damn gas hose is out of your bus before you leave the station for your next gig…
