Matt Webb is an Canadian Pop Alternative guitarist for platinum selling band Marianas Trench. Interview February 2, 2014.
In This Interview…
1. How was it recording the solo EP Right Direction?
Recording Right Direction was an absolute blast. I teamed up with a great friend, Mr. Kevvy Maher from Fake Shark Real Zombie, who produced and helped to co-write a bunch of this stuff. I enlisted the help of some of the best musicians I knew, and tried to up my guitar and vocal performances to their levels. It was a truly inspiring recording process.
2. How did the song writing process work for this product?
Generally, I record demos of all the music and sing a gibberish sounding vocal overtop of the song. Lyrics are always last. Kevvy and I came together and really hashed these tracks out, he filled in my blanks and helped pull the lyrics out of me. I had the honor of working with some incredible friends, Craig Stickland, Anami, Louis Wu, they all chipped in some amazing ideas and this record certainly would not be what it is without them.
3. How does it feel headlining your own tour?
Awesome! These shows will be so much fun. They’re smaller and more intimate that MT shows which will give me the opportunity to interact with the audience on a much more personal level. I’m really looking forward to sharing my stuff live with everyone and meeting all the fans that come out to support.
4. What would be some of the craziest stuff you’ve seen on tour with Marianas Trench?
I’ve seen it all. Literally there is very little anyone could do that would surprise me. What DOES strike me every time is the generosity and overwhelming support from our fans. I literally feel like I have the most badass army of all time behind me.
5. As a guitarist how many hours did you invest in your guitar tone throughout the years?
Haha, lots. I play pretty much every day. I spend a lot of time and resources acquiring new guitars, amplifiers and pedals, and all that goes into creating the sounds your hear from me. I’ll be honest though, Right Direction is very stripped down. I used one amp, 2 guitars (plus an acoustic), and that’s about it.
6. What would be some of your main influences today?
You’ll hear some Tom Petty, Foo Fighter, Gin Blossom influences on this stuff… but lately I’m listening to a lot of Drake, Tegan and Sara, new Foster The People, I just love good songs, don’t really care which genre.
7. What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
Big collection of old jazz and Dixieland style music.
8. Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
Wake up on the bus after 4-5 hours of sleep, eat food, work out, play Xbox, eat food, sound check, eat food, rock out, high five loud people, eat food, sleep, repeat.
9. Where do you see music going in 100 years from now?
All I can say is that I hope rock and roll is back in style.
