Doug Briney Interview
1. What’s new in the world of Doug Briney?
The new for me is pretty big, we just moved from Alaska to Nashville, TN. That’s after 21 years of living there so we are making quite a few adjustments. Another new is my new project is getting ready for release. “Super Country Cowboy” is set for release in Oct..
2. Where did the influences come from for the album It’s All Country?
I’m a member of the Independent Country Music Association (ICoMA) and while I was looking for music for that first project through the ICoMA I came across a great writer named Pat Kelley. I fell in love with his music and as a result 6 of the 10 songs on that album were written or co-written by Pat. Each of the songs chosen for that album I chose because I related to the stories told in the songs.
3. Are you keeping busy concerts and tours?
At the moment, I’ve been very busy just getting settled here in TN.. However, I am beginning to book for this fall and will be very busy with concerts and I’m planning a tour to promote my brand new project.
4. What equipment are you currently endorsing, etc.
At this time, I’m endorsing Austin Hats and Exotic Stainless Steel Buckles. Equipment wise, I love what I use and let people know how happy I’ve been with it but don’t have any official endorsements for equipment. I use for my smaller shows a Samson Expedition 308i, with Digitech vocal processor, and a Blue Encore 200 Microphone. For my larger shows I trade out the Samson speakers with a pair of JBLs and let her rip. The guitar I travel with and play is a Rainsong WS1000 and I love it.
5. Without Social Media could bands and musicians today manage to survive?
Musicians survived for a long time without Social Media so my answer is yes. However, with Social Media it has been possible for me as an Alaskan artist to gain fans world-wide and without it that would not have happened without me touring. I just visited the Ernest Tubb’s Record store here in Nashville and saw one of his touring buses with over 3,000,000 miles on it. That’s how folks made it before and now that I’m down here in the heartland, I hope to put a lot of miles on my truck.
6. What were your earliest influences in life?
I’m assuming you mean musical influences. My musical influences growing up were Kenny Rogers, Lee Greenwood, Alabama and Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. Kenny Rogers was my first album and my first concert was Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers at Knott’s Berry Farm. Non-musical influences would have been my parents and relatives, Aunts, Uncles and cousins as well as grandparents.
7. What would be some of your main influences today?
Toby Keith, Chris Young, Ronnie Dunn, Trace Adkins and Vince Gill. If I could do a duet with anyone I would want to sing with Jennifer Nettles. Jennifer if your reading this, give me a call…. please.
8. What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
A lot of Josh Groban. I also have a Bette Midler CD “Experience the Divine” I enjoy on occasion.
9. Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
Most of the touring I’ve done my day consists of driving a lot of miles…. LOL. I usually try to arrive a few hours early, get my gear set up and meet with the venue owners. I then try to get a little rest so that I’m ready mentally and physically, I then head back to the venue and mingle for a while with folks then hit it hard.
10. Where do you see music going in 100 years from now?
I think technology is going to evolve so much more that I can’t even imagine what the delivery of music will look like. I think the creative process will somewhat be lost for a while and I hope that I’m wrong about that, but I think to a small degree we already see it. Cookie cutter songs and artists who fit in a certain mold and that’s what sells. I think we will see more and more of that, more artists fitting the mold rather then developed talent.
