– What’s new in the world of Donica Knight?
Lots! Everyday is a new day and I am just excited that these next couple months I will be pushing my brand new single “Love Ain’t A Prize”. I put a lot of love and effort into this single and my new record, Can’t Buy a Southern Girl, which will be launched in early 2016.
– How was the writing process for the EP Can’t Buy a Southern Girl?
It was a blast! When I first talked with my producer Jim Huff about making this record for me, I expressed to him that I wanted to be fully involved in the writing process, not just have songs handed to me to sing. I wanted to create a sound and vibe that really felt like me, the kind of music I love to play live, and lyrically, where I’m at in my life. Jim had a great network of writers and artists he had written with over the years. We spent 3 months in LA just co-writing and demoing all kinds of songs with different people, as the songs came together it became obvious what songs should be on the new record.
– Do you enjoy making music videos?
My heavens YES! My video for “Love Aint a Prize” was the first real pro video I’ve had the opportunity to make. Like with the new record, I talked a lot with the director Noel Maitland about the feel and vibe I wanted to get across. I knew I wanted to do a live band performance type video mixed with a bit of a story line and am loving how it all came together !!!. ….I now have the video itch haha!
– How important are music videos in the industry today? How do they compare to videos from 20 years ago?
Oh geeze, music videos are highly important in today’s technology driven world. With all the new video channels and platforms available, independent artists like myself can have competitive visual videos on YouTube etc, whereas 20 years ago it was not an option.
– How do you build a song up from nothing to become something?
Wow, That’s a tough one, the creative stuff happens differently almost every time, it can start with a lyric or melody idea or just a cool musical thing I hear that gets me excited.
– What is the strangest inspiration you’ve ever had for a song?
Well one time I wrote a song called ‘Do Yo Daddy Let You Date. Enough said (chuckle)
– Do you have any tours coming up in the near future?
Yes we are planning a tour for 2016 and taking select shows until then.
– Could you describe some of your earliest influences in life and in music?
Well the first influences came directly from my parents, brother and grandparents. My father listened to 70s rock and Motown. My grandfather enjoyed Western movies and outlaw, classic country. As I got older I fell in love with the vocals of Bonnie Raitt and Etta James.
– What would we be surprised to find in your music collection at home?
Haha well you will definitely find Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, Howlin’ Wolf, Patsy Cline, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and AC/DC. I keep all my music from the past so you would also find my childhood favorites like Hanson – hmmmm Bop, Spice Girls, Avril Lavigne and Shania Twain.
– Any words of wisdom to share with aspiring artists?
It’s important to love what you do. Follow your heart & keep working everyday for your dreams!
