Rick Rozz American guitarist for notable Death Metal bands Death and Massacre.

What’s new with Massacre?
Well in the past two years, we played 70,000 Tons of Metal (2012), Wacken Open Air (2012), toured Canada (2012), South America three times (2012/2013), and recorded ‘Back From Beyond’ at CGM Studios with Tim Vazquez (studio owner, producer of BFB). We just played 70,000 Tons of Metal (2014), and Back From Beyond will hit the streets on March 24th in Europe and April 1st in the US.

Where did all the ideas and influences come from for the ‘Back From Beyond’ album?
After we played 70,000 Tons of Metal (2012), due to Century Media Records singing Massacre.
We knew we had to write a brand new full album of music, so we did so as a full band.

How did the song writing process work for the album, ‘Back From Beyond’?
Myself and drummer Mike Mazzonetto put the basic foundation of the songs together, as far as the music goes, and we presented the songs to Ed Webb (Vocals) and Terry Butler (Bass). We took it from there.

Revisiting the song “Mutilation” from Death must have been great. Whose idea was it to get covers as bonus tracks?
Yes, it’s a blast from the past. Terry and I played all of those songs, toured that album back in 1987, and we are all fans of the song, and the Scream Bloody Gore album. It was a band decision, and James Murphy played the solo on the track.

What would be some of the craziest stuff you’ve seen on tour?
Driving up and down the mountains in South America at 75mph, in a small van with 9 people, passing around corners in the middle of the night, a boulder the size of a small house blocking one lane of the two, dogs in the middle of the road– and it’s all on film.

What type of amplifiers and guitars did you use on ‘Back From Beyond’?
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifer, two 4X12 Mesa Boogie cabs, and my custom Grosmann Guitars: XANTY II and Flying V.

What would be some of your main influences today?
Slayer, Venom, Hellhammer, Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, Bathory, Exodus, etc.

What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
You would see anything from Steve Miller, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Molly Hatchet, Pat Travers, KISS, Blackfoot, Aerosmith, Possessed, Down, Crowbar, COC, Slayer, Dark Angel, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Venom, etc.

Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
Drive, drive, drive, try to get some rest/eat, drive, drive, drive, play, try to get cleaned up/eat, drive, drive, drive.

Where do you see metal music going in 100 years from now?
I won’t be here in 100 years, and that is a bit too far off for me to think about.

Terry: It’s going to be Telepathic Robot Metal!!!

Cheers & Peace,
Rick
