Interview with Rene Thomsen

1. What’s new in the world of Rene Thomsen?
Well I have a new CD coming out, and this time it comes with big promo
plan plus the music will be released in the States and Canada also. We filmed 3 videos, I have a full band for the CD and for live… it’s great. I found an awesome co-author to do the Lyrics, but he was and is much more than only that.

2. How was it recording the latest album Unbroken with all the great artists?
First of all we have a band now that has played a lot. But it is always nice to work with gifted musicians (popular or not). Their skills been added to the music and you find out what it does to the songs. You feel the influence and watch the project growing in an extra special way. The instrumental song “6 thirteen 64” for instance the intro to “We Made It” was written and played on tape by me the night after RJD passed away. Years later when my friend Mathias Don Dieth came and played it the proper way after we rearranged & rewrote it. It clicked. We said yes that is exactly how it should be. Same feel with UDO‘s voice too we made it. Or with the neck breaking Masterpiece “Unbroken” Bobby’s drums / Helge Engelke‘s lyrics & melody matching to what I had written some years back made this one to what it turned out to be. THE TITLE TRACK with pride :-). “Dream” has one of the best verse I can think of. It carried a guitar line from me in the chorus. Helge took this melody and made a skin chilling verse out of it.

3. How did you go about to making the artwork?
The front cover artwork is done by Kai Swillus. After he made me look like the Guitar Hero on the first Cover. “Lets Get Ruthless” it was time to be clearer and not so squandered. So I asked him to come to the point with the first look and not take care about too many details. Basic Idea that I gave him was the album cover “Sting In The Tail” from Scorpions. well and he is Kai Swillus. He showed me his first Idea and here we go! The booklet & all the other graffics are done by me & my friend Hiko Kramer from AVM Records in Hamburg.

4. During a year how many shows do you do on average?
That I really don’t know. I hope this time we will be able to play festivals and single shows. This depends on how the record will be accepted.

5. Could you describe some of your earliest influences?
No 1. Deep Purple Burn the main riff. But I still think that Zakk Wylde had & has the biggest influence on me. I try & play in my own way but if I would have to name somebody it will be him!

6. How important is it for a musician in this generation to spend time on social media?
I guess the time to sit back and relax & wait to get found coincidentally is over. You have to make sure people don’t overlook you they need to take notice of you and make sure that you get heard. That means you need to spend as much time in the Social networks as necessary and hook up with a number of social pages.

7. How many hours a day do you spend on social media and the internet?
As necessary :-) I am in the net with my job anyways so a lot.

8. What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
A signed poster of the Ramones to me. All Areas Pass and Touring Pass of Michael Jackson World Tour. Less cd’s than most the people would think and many cool pair of shoes for the Stage. Some 50 guitars and a Digital Audio software that is always on.

9. Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
No I haven’t done it yet only as Guitar Tech and later as Tour Manager.

10. Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?
Music will only be a business in live shows. It will shrink down to only a few sub cultures. I guess it will be all sorted out and balanced by then. All the big names in Rock will be like the Beatles for us now. Some of the Major pop stars from now will survive in memories. and i make my third cd.
