Interview with Adam Hicks
1. What’s new in the world of One Bad Son?
We are currently on a tour in Ontario. What’s new for us is usually the same. Always on the road! That is what its all about for us. As well, the new single ‘Satellite Hotel” just hit airwaves and we are actually shooting a music video for the track tonight!
2. How was it recording your single “Satellite Hotel” and how is the progress on the upcoming album?
The new album is now done and we are really excited for its release in September. We had the privilege of recording with producer Eric Ratz. (Big Wreck, Monster Truck, Cancer Bats) It was the most fun we had in studio so far I would say. “Satellite Hotel” specifically was one of my favorite tracks to lay down. We had the tune kickin’ around for over a year and I think we all knew it was going to be a special track. It must have gone through 3-4 versions until we finally got it to where it is today. I feel its something new and different for us. We were very free to do what we needed and what we wanted to with this song in the studio.
3. What route will you be going for the artwork of the forthcoming album?
We actually just finalized the artwork. Like always, our front man Shane put it all together. Besides being a great singer and writer he has a great artistic mind for our artwork. It looks bad-ass. Plus we have some great pictures from our photo shoot with our pal Mark Maryanovich.
4. Where will you be playing this summer? Anywhere interesting?
We pretty much play the west coast to the east coast. Currently, we are doing some shows here in Ontario. We then start heading west back to Vancouver with some wicked shows on the way. Then before we know it ,we will be back east in Fredericton at a festival with Billy Talent. That is one we are really excited for!
5. What are some of the funniest things that you have seen while on the road?
The funniest things actually come from our tech/roadie guy. I don’t know how he thinks of some of the things he says. It really keeps things on the road light and humorous. He’s a beauty. Honestly, spending the amount of time we do in our van I think we find a lot of things funny that actually are not. We call it “Van Mange”.
6. Someday do you see a biography being written about the experiences you acquired or will acquire in your life?
I would be honoured if someone thought my life was interesting enough to write about. If there is ever a One Bad Son book, that would be pretty great. We’re not quite doing the Motely Crue shenanigans. Maybe we should step it up!
7. When writing a song, is there such a thing as investing too much time?
I think this seriously depends on the song. We know when we have an idea worth investing time into. “Satellite Hotel” actually is a good example. We knew we loved the basic song idea, but it needed work to get it to where we wanted it. It is one of the best parts of writing songs. You know it can be great but you have to put in the work to get it there. But yes, there is a point where you are like; “this is just not that good of an idea.” There has been many occasions where one of us brings in an idea and you can tell pretty quick that the other guys aren’t diggin’ it. It’s tough but you have to move on and not get too attached to an idea. It was one of the hardest things for me to understand. But that’s how we roll. We all trust each other and we all love writing new tunes. There is no shortage of ideas.
8. How is the music scene in your area nowadays?
We are all Saskatoon boys. That city has always had a great music community. We are proud to be from there and we always have some of our best shows there. That is what its all about, a musical community. Lets face it, Rock n Roll isn’t the biggest genre anymore, to have a good music scene you need bands uniting with other bands. It’s not a competition. We all go see as many shows as we can. That’s how you build a scene.
9. What’s your point of views towards YouTube for bands to promote their music?
I think it’s great! It makes is easier and very accessible for all bands to get their music out there. It’s been great for us. I love reading and responding to our comments.
10. How is the life of the road for you and the band in 2014?
It’s our favourite part about music, being on the road. This year feels great so far. We are playing places we’ve never been and have been getting such amazing crowds out. Being on the road is all about taking your music directly to your fans. We always say “we are always on tour,” and it’s true. We will play anywhere that we can. We have the best fans in the country and we want to see them all.
