Jaret Reddick Interview Singer and guitarist for People On Vacation and Bowling for Soup. In this interview he discusses the Chronicles of Tim Powers album, producing videos and music influences. December 4, 2014.

– What’s new in the world of People On Vacation?
Jaret Reddick – It was a slow summer for us. I was touring with BFS. So it was good to get back to things in the fall. We are doing some Texas shows in December and then some touring in the new year. Excited to get this album out!!!
– How was it recording your album The Chronicles of Tim Powers?
We recorded as we wrote.
We would have an idea and start hashing it out and then immediately start laying it down. I would make a loop and we would literally just start layering stuff on top. After we were done with the music, we sent it to Linus of Hollywood to add bass and some other nuggets, he got a drummer to play on it, and then sent it back to us to sing. It is WAY different than the BFS process, but it is a lot of fun. We laugh a lot.
– How did you go abouts to making the artwork?
Ryan is a bit of a nerd. A loveable nerd. HE spends a lot of time and money on comic books and in and around that world. HE is also an amazing artist and has met a lot of people in that world. When we had the title, we didn’t really know how to tie it into the album itself…I mean, this album is pretty raw topically. We mean that shit! So Ryan found a very accomplished comic book guy that loves our band, and made it happen. HE is good at stuff too!

– During a year how many shows do you do on average and how crazy does the schedules get?
My schedule is always insane. Between the different bands, voice gigs and other projects I do, I have 3 kids that I try and be with as much as possible. I don’t tour as much as I used to, but it is still pretty significant. Playing is still a great time.
– Could you describe some of your earliest influences in life and in music?
My parent’s were very into music. IT was always on and they were always singing. we spent a lot of time in the car and they would sing and harmonize to Willie Nelson, The Eagles, Donna Summer and Neil Diamond. I think that’s how I learned to sing. Then one day a kid from school played me Ozzy’s “Crazy Train” and a few months later I heard Motley Crue. I was hooked!
– How important is it for a musician in this generation to spend time on social media?
It is essential. IT is hard for some , I know. I mean, back in the day, you got in a van and toured and made an album when you could save up the money. Social media is more important than touring now. IT is crazy. But I have adapted nicely. I like being in touch with those that dig what I do.
– Producing great music videos is it more important now than it has ever been?
Definitely. I feel like there were a few years where it didn’t matter. But nowadays, it is as important as ever. The internet is visual and it is free. You gotta sell it however you can!
– What could we find interesting in your music collection at home?
It is REALLY diverse. I pretty much just listen to country lately. Loving Texas country. I listen to The Eli Young band a LOT!
– Could you describe what goes on in a day in your life as a musician on tour?
A lot of sitting! ha. Lots of TV, lots of laughs and lots of beers with the dudes. Basically, 22 hours a day you are waiting for the next show.
– Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?
Gosh who knows! Since Rock and Roll has only been around 60 years or so, I guess anything can happen. I am sure Dave Grohl has it all mapped out. HE will let us know soon!
