Another Lost Year: Clinton Cunanan (2016 Interviews)

Another Lost Year is a nationally touring quartet out of Charlotte, NC that tours the US coast to coast. Another Lost Year Interview with Clinton Cunanan. Another Lost Year

In This Interview…

– What’s new in the world of Another Lost Year?

Well, Adam started baking. That’s really all I got other than we had a new album come out. Doing our thing, trying not to strangle each other in the van. Although, sometimes that can be fun. And we had a new album come out.

– How was it recording your album Alien Architect and where did the influences come from for this album including the artwork?

It was a very spiritual process. We recorded in some cornfields. We were influenced by everyday life. Everything that was happening around us. It’s a crazy world. It’s not hard to find influences. The artwork came from an idea I had. I gave it to Adam and Aaron Avila and they came up with what you see today. I wanted something that would pique curiosity. And it’s weird as shit.

– Do you consider album artwork as important now that music is mostly downloaded?

I think it’s more important now. In the words of Thomas Rhett, know what I’m saying? In a download world, I think it’s more important to have artwork that stands out and you better have the music to back it up. Which I think we do. It’s just as weird as the artwork. You know what I’m saying? Also, did I mention ours is weird as shit?

– Do you have any tours coming up in the near future?

We’re always prospecting. Right now we’re just doing some headlining stuff, some big stuff, but it’s all talk.Another Lost Year Alien Architect

– How many shows do you play per year on average, and how crazy does the schedule get?

The last four out of five years we’ve done 250+ shows per year. The last year we’ve slowed down dramatically to prepare for the album. It shows in the album that we took the time off to really work on it. With 200 shows a year it’s tough on us and our personal lives. We work about 15-16 hours a day seven days a week. Sometimes nine days a week. Plus with shows and driving, it wears you down.

– How is the music scene in your area these days? Are clubs still popular?

Our go to venues are shutting down. Livenation and ticketmaster are blossoming and it’s tough to compete with that. There are still a few bands hanging on in Charlotte and that’s good to see.

– Is the band fans of Spotify and similar streaming services? What are your thoughts on this?

I mean, I subscribe to those services. This is where it gets tough because the music part of it is not the business. The business part of it is the business. And my biggest downfall is that I believe in the music and not the business.

– In your opinion, which album would be essential to have if someone were stranded on a deserted island?

Greenwheel Soma Holiday. And of course Alien Architect. Oh and Garth Brooks Double Disc Live. Know what I’m saying? I guess that’s technically four albums.

– Any words of wisdom to share with aspiring artists?

Never forget your vision. You’re trying to show people how you perceive the world. Not how they should perceive the world, but how you perceive it. And get a side hustle. You’re going to need it.
